At Bunger Surf Shop, our family has always believed that surfboards carry stories. Ones of craftsmanship, community, and the eras that shaped them. That belief came full circle at this year’s 50th Surf Expo in Orlando. At this year’s surf industry event, we were deeply honored that event organizers selected a classic Charlie Bunger Sr. surfboard design as the official model for the prestigious Champions Shape-Off Challenge.
For our family and for everyone connected to the Bunger name, seeing Charlie Sr.’s work elevated on such a respected stage was both humbling and meaningful. It was a powerful reminder that true craftsmanship never fades. It evolves, inspires, and continues to guide future generations.
The Champions Challenge: A Tribute to Craft and Legacy
Unlike previous years, the 2026 Shape-Off was designed as a Champions Challenge, bringing together eight former Shape-Off winners to recreate a single board: a Charlie Bunger Sr. 1970s-era single-fin swallowtail. This wasn’t just a shaping competition — it was a tribute.
Each invited shaper was tasked with interpreting Charlie Sr.’s original design, honoring its lines, foam flow, and functional intent while showcasing their own mastery. Over three days on the Surf Expo show floor, attendees were able to witness shaping in its purest form — raw, precise, and deeply respectful of tradition.
Why Charlie Bunger Sr. Surfboards Still Matter
Charlie Sr. shaped his first surfboard in 1961, and from that moment forward, his work became synonymous with East Coast surf culture. His boards were known for their balance, speed, and clean lines — designed not for trends, but for surfers who wanted equipment they could trust in real conditions.
His influence extended far beyond Long Island. Charlie Sr. helped define East Coast board building at a time when regional shaping identities truly mattered. That impact was later recognized with his induction into the East Coast Surfing Hall of Fame and the International Surfboard Builders Hall of Fame. These honors reflect both Charlie Bunger Sr.’s technical skill and his lasting contribution to the sport.
A Deserving Winner Emerges
At the conclusion of the competition, the judges awarded first place to Matt Calvani, lead shaper for Bing Surfboards. Matt’s surfboard entry was praised for its accuracy, craftsmanship, and respect for the original design. Allen White and Jim Hannan earned second and third place, respectively, in what was an exceptionally strong field.
Each competitor brought something special to the challenge, and every finished board reflected a deep appreciation for Charlie Sr.’s shaping philosophy.

To see Charlie Bunger Sr.’s work not only remembered, but actively recreated and celebrated at Surf Expo, was profoundly meaningful to our family. We extend our sincere thanks to the event organizers, the judges, and the shapers who approached this challenge with such care and reverence.
